Why I Chose These Tools
I've tested a fair bit of gear, including the cheaper stuff, and honestly, this kit strikes the best balance between performance and price. It’s what I’d call prosumer level. Good enough for serious content creation without needing a full studio setup.
Here’s why I picked what I did:
- I went with the Insta360 Flow
After testing a few options, I found it outperformed the DJI Osmo. It tracks better, stabilises better, and overall just works better. DJI still has a great ecosystem and strong brand presence, but based on current features, the Flow came out on top. - Your phone is your best camera
You're already carrying it, and it’s powerful. No need to bring extra gear unless you want a dedicated second camera for hands-free shooting. If that’s the case, the Insta360 Go 3s is a solid option. - Built-in tripod legs and extenders
Both stabilisers work as mini tripods and selfie sticks, which saves you from packing extra gear for hands-free or wide-angle shots. - Lighting is a backup, not your main light
Natural daylight is your best friend. The built-in lights are helpful, but they’re not strong enough for dark rooms. Honestly, I haven’t found a travel-friendly lighting setup I’d fully recommend. If you're filming in low light often, you might need to step up to a DSLR with better low-light capability. I’ll cover that in another blog post. - Storage heads-up
Video fills up phone storage fast, especially in 4K. Unless you really need the extra resolution, I’d recommend filming in 1080p. Most content is viewed on phones anyway, and 1080p looks crisp and clean without the storage strain. - Still great for desk setups
This kit works great for casual home setups too. If you’re planning to create more from home, I can suggest a few simple add-ons to take it to the next level. - Who this setup is perfect for
This is ideal for solo creators, digital nomads, or anyone running a business while travelling. It’s great for quick walk-and-talk vlogs, remote interviews, social reels, or mini course content on the go. - Room to grow
This setup is a solid starting point, but it's also flexible enough to grow with you. As your content evolves, you can upgrade your phone, improve your mic setup, or refine your editing process without needing to replace the whole kit.
Tips for Creating on the Go
- Look for good lighting
Aim for soft, natural light. Not too dark, not too harsh. Don’t film with light behind you unless you’re going for a silhouette effect. - Use a mic
Audio matters. You can get away with shaky footage, but bad audio will lose your audience fast. - Keep it simple
The more gear you bring, the more there is to set up and manage. - Have a rough plan
Know your key shots, but leave space for spontaneity. - Don’t stress about perfection
Be yourself. Authentic content always connects best.
Why This Setup Works
This kit is made for people who want to create solid content without getting bogged down by gear. It fits in a backpack, takes minutes to set up, and works whether you’re filming TikToks, interviews, reels, vlogs, or just behind-the-scenes snippets.
